Page 51 - Gonzaga Record 1950-59
P. 51
Fr O’Conor wrote to parents at the ends of each term
(later headmasters have generally written a yearly report
at the end of each summer.
A collection of his letters reflects some of the very
typical concerns common to his successors – uniform, for
example, and the gentle prompting of parents as to how
post-match celebrations should be conducted. He was in
the habit of regularly commenting on sickness among the
boys and the effects on attendance, and also on the
weather and whether or not it interfered with the schedule
of sports.
Some extracts appear below.
Dated January 1954. The letter strikes the very typical
Gonzaga note that victory at sport is not the only value.
Of considerable interest is the detail recorded elsewhere
that Gonzaga teams of this period did not play
competitive rugby against Protestant schools. (See section
Sports for details of the first rugby game against Belvedere.)
