PREFACE

I welcome this first issue of The Gonzaga Record and I congratulate Fr Lee and his
associates on its production. A school annual serves many purposes: it constitutes
an important record of a school's development over many generations; it
strengthens, over time, a school's sense of identity; and it links the present pupils
with those who have long since left. This, the first edition, is rightly strong on
history, and though in the future the emphasis will undoubtedly shift from the past
to the present, and deal equally with the large contribution made by the lay
masters, this issue will certainly be seen as an important document on the origins
and development of the ideals which have shaped Gonzaga.
