GONZAGA AT SIXTY: A WORK IN PROGRESS
The players in this photo I am involved in Coach educaion and tutor the tennis Ireland coaches training course at the
represented Gonzaga at tennis
in Leinster Cup compeions. Naional training centre at DCU, and was a founder member of our naional coaches associaion.
Some players played at two It would be fantasic to see some irish players qualifying for and performing well in Grand
age levels. The cup is the
Leinster Senior Cup (Division Slam events, as it would help to raise the proile of the sport in ireland. Most young players quite
One) which Gonzaga won in sensibly hedge their bets and combine an educaion with their tennis. Oten this is done through
1984, 1985 and 1986.
Back Row (L to R): David US tennis scholarships, and the club has strong links in this regard.
Keenahan, Julian Morgan,
Keith Mulcahy, Eoin Brophy, I coninue to enjoy my own tennis and have represented Ireland in over-35 and over-45 age
Michael Doran, Conor Murphy, groups. Veterans Tennis is a thriving area of the sport, and it really is a game to be enjoyed from
Greg McDaid, Bobby Byrne.
Middle Row (L to R): Anthony age three to ninety. One of my friends who is involved in organising Veterans Tennis overseas
Geoghegan, David O’Grady, recently received a complaint that the oldest age group available in an event in the States was
Sean Molloy (Captain), Gavin
Blake, Peter Fahy. over 80s. The complaint came from a 90-year-old !
Front Row (L to R): John
McKenna, Donogh Molloy, I am married to Eleanor and we have two children, Anna age 8 and James age 5. The kids
Kevin O’Brien, Declan are staring to get involved in sport and this is something that I will be encouraging to the full in
Fassbender
the same way that it was encouraged for me by home and school and friends.
Players of my age group and beyond will fondly remember the role played by Fr Edmund
Keane or ‘Neddie’ to his fans. He singlehandedly carried the tennis mantle at the school and
Gonzaga has enjoyed considerable success at schools tennis. Those who were students of the
classics as well as tennis players were singing to the Father Keane tune. I remember witnessing
him hearing a player described as ‘cool’ by one of my team mates, promping him to ask if that
meant that the player was ‘not so hot’!
Fr Keane passed on the tennis baton to David Keenehan at the school, and David has done
honour to the role in carrying on the strong tennis tradiion at Gonzaga.
I am involved in organising the Past v Present match at the school each May. This year one
of our past pupils Barry King gained a spot on the Davis Cup team in March, and ‘current’ pupil
John Morrissey has taken ime out of school to play full ime Junior Tennis. He is currently the
40th best junior in the world and has earned the right to play Maindraw Junior Boys Singles at
all the Grand Slam events.
The things that are important to me now were important to me and forged by my ime and
experiences at gonzaga. My fun and friendships are largely unchanged and through my family I
am now passing them on to the next generaion.
