The Gonzaga Operas

In 1975, Gerry Murphy wrote and composed the first
of his cycle of five operas which was to receive an
unbroken run of performances until the composer’s
retirement thirty years later. Without question, there is
not a single Gonzaga graduate from an entire
generation in whose head the melodies of these
operas, and the names Alpha Chemicals, Warbeck,
Alfred Simple, Sir Fiendish Cadd . . . are firmly
embedded.

In 1974, however, Gerry directed someone
else’s work – The Pride of the Regiment, and in 1975
the operetta whose programme appears below:
